How to work with MIDI Files
What are MIDI files?
MIDI Files are instructions for musical instruments which understand the MIDI format. Microsoft Media Player understands these instructions even though technically it is not a MIDI instrument so you can use your computer to play MIDI files also.
There are many commercial programs available which can play MIDI files. Some of these programs like Sonar, Cakewalk, and Logic Studio are rather expensive and very powerful. One which is freely available that I recommend is called Keykit. The place to get Keykit is from Tim Thompson at http://nosuch.com/keykit/
Once you have downloaded and installed Keykit, you can see instructions on how to use it as an accompanist HERE.
Why use MIDI files?
The value of MIDI files is:
- You can change the tempo of the music without changing the pitch.
- You can transpose the music.
- You can make modifications to the music to suit your needs.
- MIDI files are small.
- You can send MIDI files to any MIDI capable instrument.
